Stockholm, Sweden and the last sea days

Another quick post here .. Sorry things have slipped these last few days.  Running out of Internet time, and the time you are on is extremely slow.  We are now on our first of the final two sea days.  The water on the Baltic has been great.  Not looking forward to getting back to the rough waters near Dover tomorrow.

Stockholm was lovely.  Wished we had more time.  Our tour was changed slightly due to the Royal Wedding on Saturday, June 19.  Instead of visiting the Royal Palace, we visited the Vasa Museum.  Very nice.  It was worth the switch.  The boat ride was good too.

These last two days are relaxing.  Last night the hectic schedule in Russia caught up with me and I was asleep by 10 pm.  I felt so much more rested in the morning.  To those following us, you are in for a treat!  This cruise has been great!  Don't know if I will post again.  I will try to add some photos when I get back!

St, Petersberg and Helsinki

Very quick post here, as heading up to Pirate's party soon.  Russia was amazing.  Smooth disembarking and boarding the ship.  No problems with private tours getting off the ship.  Days were jam packed.  Did too much, no time to breath.  I am exhausted.  Streets were quite busy, as there was a government convention meeting here, so high security, plus the teen graduation party was Saturday night, so teen's everywhere.

Helsinki was one of my favourites.  Loved Porvoo and recommend it.

I know you want to hear more, but only have 10 minutes left in my quota so want to get this out, before I run out of time.  Tomorrow we are off to Stockholm!!

Sea Day - June 17, 2010

First of all ... sorry for the delay in posting... Internet is lousy on board!

Today is a relaxing day at sea. Tonight is the Villain’s show. Kirstyn took the Villain dance lessons! She did pretty good, I guess those dance lessons paid off. Breakfast we were a no show, so we went to Topsider’s for lunch. I talked to Captain John in line. He seemed like a very nice man. He did tell me that Captain Tom will be on the Dream, but I think I already knew that.

Today was actually a slow day. We read on deck 9 (used a blanket because it was chilly!). We did the Disney trivia. We got 10 out of 25. The winners got 12 out of 25. It was really hard. Tonight was the villain’s dinner at Lumiere. Yummy ... had the ravioli for an appetizer and the New York steak for dinner.

The “Villains Tonight” show was good in my opinion. Afterwards there was the Villain’s Ball in the Lobby Atrium, followed by a balloon drop. Very fun, but disorganized. Too many people, too hot. We are going to try to get to sleep early today, as tomorrow and Saturday are going to be very busy. They are switching dinner to 5 pm for those with night excursions. We are scheduled to arrive at noon, with our excursion meet time at 12:45!

Oh yeah ...for you fellow cruisers following along, we found out tonight that access to the Royal Palace will not be available on Monday, due to the recent Royal Wedding celebrations. Our tour has been changed and we even got a small refund. Don’t know if it will affect any of you or not.

Warnemunde, Germany

A quick post about my day in Warnemunde, Germany. The day was busy for those going to Berlin. They had a 6:30 meet. From what I could gather, the first train was reserved for excursions only. If you were on your own, you couldn’t take the train, but I may be wrong. Kirstyn and I decided to stay in Warnemunde. We did the “Rostock’s Regional Highlights” tour. It started at 8:45; so technically, we got to sleep in,
The tour was nice. We took the bus into Rostock and toured the town. We visited St. Mary’s church. It was originally a Catholic church, but is now a Lutheran church. We also visited a monastery where the young woman stayed from age 10 and up. The guide explained that the guests were the younger daughter’s that the parents could not afford to marry off. After the city tour, we visited a micro brewery where we got to sample their brew and have a German pretzel. Finally, we took a ferry boat back to the Magic.

Now I know I am boring, but the first thing I did when I got on board is make a dash to the Laundromat. I figured this would be the best time, as most of the boat was away for the day. Turned out I was right, as when I got to the Laundromat, it was empty! After laundry, we delivered our FE gifts (it is a DIS thing!), and went to dinner. We were the only one at our table tonight. What fun. It was nice to have a quiet dinner for two. Our waiter, Louis, surprised us with a sample of Indian curry. Kirstyn surprised me by trying some. It was quite spicy and the look on her face was priceless.

The evening was quiet. We basically did Karaoke and made flubber, then it was off to bed. Tonight the clocks went forward again! Tomorrow is a sea day!

Copenhagen, Denmark

A little slow on this post, but I’ll try to remember all the details. Today we stopped in Copenhagen, Denmark. Our tour today was “Panoramic tour of Copenhagen and Carlsberg Brewery”. The tour was at 12:30, so we got to sleep in a little. We did get up, but I missed breakfast by 10 minutes. Kirstyn did get up and get herself some. She did bring me back a doughnut, but that was it. I had to wait until 11 am and had a slice of pizza for breakfast. Oh the life of a cruiser!!!!

Today’s tour started off uneventful. We had a lovely tour of Copenhagen. We got to see the residence of the royal family and got to see the second largest yacht in the world. Unfortunately for us, the Little Mermaid statue is on vacation in Shanghai, so we got to see a video screen of here in China.

Next, we made our way to the brewery, and as we arrived, the rain finally fell. It rained and hailed, and there was even lightning and thunder. I felt sorry for those out on the street. The tour was self guided, so Kirstyn and I enjoyed the leisurely walk. For those that don’t know me, my dad spent some time in Copenhagen at the Brewery. He worked on the Canadian Carlsberg campaign. I was hoping to see some mention of him, but alas there was none. At least I felt I was walking somewhere he had been. At the end of the tour, we got to sample some beer.

Tonight’s dinner was the animated show at Animator’s Palette. The meals are starting to meld together, and I think it was the Beef Tenderloin that I had. It was good, whatever it was. After dinner we went to the “Once upon a Song” show, featuring five staff members. Kirstyn was the lucky one chosen to dance with one of the male performers. I think I will be sitting in the aisle seat from now on! Next was the “Who wants to be a Mouseketeer?”show and karaoke. Kirstyn sang “Part of this world”. She did really good!

So that was our day in Copenhagen. Tomorrow we are off to Warnemunde, Germany.

Hello from Carlsberg Brewery in Copenhagen. Quick post as Internet is free! Weather finally got worse...
So ... here we are at our first port, Oslo, Norway. Kirstyn and I are booked on the Viking Heritage. The tour was good, but not as much Viking as I expected. Before I get to the tour, let me state that the weather was chilly in the morning, warmed up a bit, so I finally took my jacket off and it started to sprinkle a little. Nothing bad though ... only lasted a few minutes. I hope the next few cruises are warmer. Okay, on with the day.

Our tour, was set to meet at 8:30, and of course, we were running late. Hurried up to Topsider’s for a doughnut, then hightailed it to the Walt Disney Theater. We got registered and were assigned to bus 6. Our driver was Bjorn, and our tour guide was either Sophie or Sonia ... can’t remember. The bus headed out and we got an audio tour of Oslo. We saw the new Opera House, Akerhaus, the town, the main shopping area, and a lesson on the economic state of Norway. It was interesting.

Our first stop was the Viking museum to see the Viking ships. Nice ... but expected more. The ships were bigger than I thought, and very ornate. We were there about a half hour. The guide told us some history about the Vikings and allowed us to roam and take pictures.

Back on the bus, we headed to the Open Air Museum. This is a replica of an old Norwegian town. We saw church, some farms from different time eras, the theatre, the bank ... you get the idea. Nice walk, but you definitely need comfortable shoes. We got a snack here too, some potato pancake thing, very yummy, and a bottle of water or juice box.

Once again, we got back on the bus and headed to the Vigeland Sculpture Park, our next stop. If you are doing Oslo on your own, I recommend this park. It is lovely and the statues are amazing, but if you have little kids, be aware, the statues are anatomically correct. They aren’t that bad, but they have all the right body parts. In the park there is a gorgeous fountain, but don’t stand down wind, as you may get sprayed. I speak from experience. One more site to see is the monolith and the zodiac sun clock. Time to get back on the bus!

Our next and final stop is the Holmenkollen Ski Museum and Ski Lift. First the drive up the mountain was an experience. I marvel at the bus drivers and how they can manoeuvre the buses around those tight corners. Now back to the Holmenkollen, the museum was small, the gift shop was expensive, the view was magnificent. That sums it up. There is a simulator ride, but you need 10 people, and we didn’t have time to wait.

We headed back to the ship. At the port there are some tourist shops where the prices are more reasonable. We then boarded the ship and grabbed something quick to eat. We watched a movie on the big screen, I made a dummy booking to hopefully be transferred to the Fantasy, and looked at the photos in Shutters. Supposedly, two people were late getting back, but not too late that they were left behind. We were warned later on that the all aboard time in Copenhagen is tight, so to be sure to get back!!!

Dinner tonight was at Lumiere’s. I had the Escargot, the shrimp and the Beef Tenderloin. I had the Creme Brulee for dessert. Very good! We got the Beauty and Beast dance as well. After dinner, Kirstyn and I did the Disney Tune Trivia and came in second by 1 point. I thought for sure Kirstyn would win this one. Next was Jay Lamont’s adult show, a very funny act. This brings me to now. I’m typing this report, posting it, then off to bed! Talk to you tomorrow with a report on Copenhagen.

First Day at Sea

Our first day at sea is here. We’re finding it a bit rough. Poor Kirstyn has been suffering. I got up early to attend the DVC welcome pyjama party. The party was at 9:00 am, but since we moved our clocks forward before going to bed, it felt more like 8 am. It was the usual gathering ... gift giveaway and 200 on board credit as the big prize. I won nothing.

After the party, I dragged Kirstyn out of bed and we made our way to brunch. We missed it by 15 minutes, so, it ended up being an early lunch. The day was non-eventful. We played board games, watched a movie, and wandered the ship. Kirstyn’s still had not found her sea legs, so she stayed in the cabin, while I went to the DIS meet. It was great meeting everyone! Such nice people are on the DIS board.

It was now time to get ready for dinner. Tonight is formal night. There were a lot of men in similar tuxes. It looked like a lot of them rented them. We got all dressed for the night, got our photo taken, and then made our way to Parrot’s Cay. Kirstyn did not last. Just the thought of eating was enough. She excused herself to go back to the room without eating. I had the scallops, potato soup, turbot and my personal favourite, the banana bread pudding. We finally met our head waiter. Her name is Nodyu from South Africa. It was weird. I was just saying that it was strange we had not met her, and five minutes later she walks up. So, I ate quickly and went to check on Kirstyn. My dinner mates recommended the sea band, even our assistant waiter Daniela had one, or two, on. I stopped at Treasure Ketch to pick one up for her. When I got back to the cabin, she put it on. After about an hour she started to feel better. Let’s hope this works or it’s going to be a long cruise.

We decided to skip the night activities and stay in tonight. We did get a nice surprise under our door. We got a signed Ducky Williams commemorative print. It was a picture of the white cliffs with Mickey, Donald, Goofy and Pluto carved in like Mount Rushmore.

So that is the highlight of our day. Tomorrow we are in Oslo, Norway. More to come!

Cruise passenger update

Special note regarding cruise ship capacity.... Cruise is two thirds full and only 200 kids.  Over 1000 DVC members.

Newsflash to future cruisers!

Note to future cruisers... they are limiting time to 60 minutes (not sure if daily or cruise limit) for blog sites, and skype, msn, etc,  in other words sites that use large bandwidth.  Hopefully this will improve internet response!

June 12 ... Let the adventure begin!

Well here it is ... cruise day. This morning Diane, our B&B owner, reserved a cab bus for Heidi’s family and Kirstyn and I to arrive at 10 in the morning for the trip to the terminal. It arrived on schedule and took us about 5 minutes to load up everything and be on our way. The cab fare to the terminal was 8.50 GBP. We arrived there by 10:30 and got ready to board. We were in group 3 to board. Getting through customs was easy, and we were on the ship around noon. Fellow DISer Joanne’s family was selected to be the first family to board. What an honour.

Once on board, we had a buffet lunch at Parrot’s Cay, then had about a half hour to wait and were in our rooms by 1 pm. Our luggage made it to the room before 2. Kirstyn watched TV while I unpacked. The lifeboat drill was set for 4:00, so when everything was put away, we relaxed until the drill was sounded. After the drill, it was up to deck 10 for the sail away party. We managed to get a good seat for the show, and enjoyed it. There was a good crowd out in Dover, waving good bye as we left.

After dinner, Kirstyn and I rushed to Treasure Ketch to see what they had for souvenirs. For you pin collectors, bad news, there is no special pin collection for the Baltic. Also, there was no special towel forthe cruise either. They had some nice t-shirts and sweatshirts though. They did say that there will be a special t-shirt for the inaugural that will be available once we reach Germany. This will just be available for us!

At this point, we had fifteen minutes to get to dinner, so we booted it back to the cabin to put away our purchases and hightailed it to the restaurant. For dinner, we are on the Animator’s Palette, Parrot Cay, Lumiere rotation. Our server is Louis from India and Daniella from Serbia. Dinner was good. I had the Calamari, Arugula salad, Steak and Kahlua Brule. Yummy!!!

After dinner, it was time for the Adventures away show. I’ve seen this show before, so it was nothing new. Captain John is on board with us and the cruise director is Brent from Australia. Kirstyn and I went to the Magic Quest Adult Scavenger show, with our dinner companions Marianne and Kent. It was hilarious. If you have never done this, I recommend it, so much fun. Poor Jeff walked in as they called for a blonde, so I grabbed him and pulled him to the front. He had no idea what was going on.

So that is it for now. Have to get some sleep. The clocks go ahead an hour tonight. DVC meeting is tomorrow morning at 9 am. There was a nice wooden box waiting for us when we got back to the cabin from DVC.

Oh yea ... to you DISer’s that were wondering about Hadeland. I asked if there were any openings available. They said they are trying to get another bus together and they were taking a waitlist. I asked if I could be on it and exchange my current Viking Heritage excursion for it. They made a note and told me to ask again tomorrow. Wish me luck!

Dover - Day 2

So ... not sure this will get posted until tomorrow or not, as I am having problems with the Internet right now. We just got back from dinner at Cullen’s Yard. The food was good, but the service was slow. Oh well, the company was great. We met other DISers, so it will be nice to recognize someone tomorrow.
Today was a busy day. We got up at 7:00 for breakfast at 8:00 am. We met with Heidi (HAS) at breakfast and planned out our day. We found out you can get a family explorer pass for 10 pound which was good on the Dover buses for one day. We took the bus to Canterbury and visited the Cathedral and the town. What we saw of Canterbury was beautiful. The cathedral was something else. It was built in the 12th century and I’m amazed at what they could accomplish back then. Kirstyn and I toured on our own, while Heidi and family hired a private guide. We both had fun! We were in Canterbury for about 2.5 hours. Advice would be to get there early. The school tours start arriving around noon.

After Canterbury, we returned to Dover and changed to the 15i bus to Dover castle. You can walk there, but the walk is all uphill. At the castle, we spent time in the museum and the tower, and toured the underground war tunnels. This was worth the price of admission. At this point Kirstyn and I were tired, so while the others stayed to visit the lighthouse, we decided to take the bus home. After waiting for 15 minutes for the bus, we decided to walk. It was downhill this time after all!!! We made it back without getting lost. When we caught up with Heidi for supper, we discovered we were at the wrong bus stop, so that could have accounted for the wait!!

Next was dinner, but we’ve already talked about that, so I will sign off to get a good night’s sleep. Tomorrow we board the Magic. Can’t wait!!

Day one in Dover

Hi ... Thought I would prevail upon you our adventures in Dover!  Yesterday, we got settled into our room by around 12 and 1 pm.   We met Heidi from the DIS boards, and made plans to visit Dover in the morning with them.  Kirstyn and I went for a walk around the town and had some dinner at a little cafè.  Nothing extravagent, as we were both exhausted.  The town of Dover is lovely and small.  We walked for about 2 hours, then came back to the room.  We thought we might go out a little later,  but made the mistake of lying down.  Next thing I knew it was 12:30 am.  I decided wisely to stay in  bed and fell back asleep for another 5 hours!  In the morning we met Heidi and her family at breakfast and made our plans for the day.  I will get to that in another post after dinner.  We are meeting our fellow cruisers at Cullin's  Yard in 45 minutes, so have to go!

BTW  ... Maison Dieu B&B is lovely and very conveniently located!  Those staying here will love it!  Diane and Barry are very nice and quite helpful!

We are in England... arrived safe and sound.  The flight was an hour late taking off, but that was the only hitch!  We made it to Dover and are about to hit the town, trying to stay awake!  More when we get back!  We are staying at the Maison Dieu in Dover

Hi ... At Mom's right now ... Heading out in about an hour!!  Will be on British soil in under 12 hours!  Yaaa!!!

Tuesday, June 8, 2010

Hi all ... Time for a second post .... Can't believe I leave tomorrow morning.  I have been planning this trip for quite a while, and it is hard to believe that it is here.

So .. what is my status. I'm done work ... yaaaaahhhh!  Everything is bought ,, and laid out ... just have to put it in the suitcase.  I think Budd has figured out that something is up.  He sees the suitcases out and he isn't quite sure what to think.  On one hand it means we're leaving him behind.  On the other, it means he is going to spend time with his friends Dusty, Jackie, Gypsy, and Cody!  What more could a dog ask for!

So tonight the packing will be done and weighed.  Tomorrow morning, we drop Budd off, then head to Mom's for a few hours.  My brother and his girlfriend will be driving us to the airport for our flight.  On Thursday we will be in England.  We are being met by a driver, and then off to Dover.  We will be staying at the Maison Dieu in Dover!  Can't wait!

Welcome

Just quick post to say Hello .. and welcome to my trip blog. I'll try to update daily so you can follow along, but if I'm having too much fun and forget, well, sorry, too bad :)

This will be Kirstyn's and my third Disney Cruise, and first trip to all of the ports. This will be our first time in an inside cabin. I was hoping Disney would surprise us with an upgrade, but alas, no such luck.

We leave in 4 days, so the next few will be spent doing laundry and packing. Talk to you soon!
